Menorca Maxi: J One and Momo at the top

Mahon, Menorca, May 30 2015

After five races and with one discard already applied, the Menorca Maxi Regatta 2015 is starting to unveil its potential winners. The Maxi 72 Momo is the virtual winner of the Maxi 72 class with only one race to go.

Wally boats Tango G, Open Season and Lyra are on top of the leader board separated by only two points.

Friday’s racing finished with a tie in the Wally Class and a three way tie in the Maxi 72 class. After the two windward/leeward races sailed today and the application of the discard the possible winners of this second edition of the Menorca Maxi Regatta are slow starting to show.

THE WALLY CLASS GOES TANGO

In the Wally class the classification shows a tight championship, with daily changes in the leader board, in which only two points separate the top four teams: Tango G, Open Season, Lyra and Magic Blue (10, 12, 13 and 13 points respectively).

Open Season won the first race of the day, followed by Tango G and Lyra. Whilst the second race went to Magic Carpet Cubed, followed by Magic Blue and a consistent Lyra.

Open Season is the one boat that has suffered from the discard as their worst result, the coastal race, where they scored a ninth cannot be discarded.

MOMO ENJOYS MENORCA

Among the Maxis 72, IMA member Dieter Schoen's Momo has scored two first places in the day that shaped him as winner of the Menorca Maxi Regatta with a race to spare. The boat, which includes both Markus Wieser and Ross Halcrow in their crew, has three victories out of five races sailed.

A possible victory in the eyes of Matteo Auguadro: "We’ve practically won the Menorca Maxi Regatta so we will enjoy tomorrow’s race, but we`ll still sail to win it. We are very happy: two regattas this season so far and two victories would be very nice. "

If the leader is clear, all the other positions are still open in a fleet that has remained very compact throughout the day and even included a photo-finish.

Peter Ogden’s Jethou and George Sakellaris’ Shockwave will sail on Sunday to break the 10 point tie that puts them in second and third respectively. Today they finished 3 and 2, and 2 and 5.
