Second day of racing in Maxi Yacht Capri Trophy

Capri, 12 May 2021

Very nice weather conditions graced the waters of Capri today for the second day of racing in the Maxi Yacht Capri Trophy, part of Rolex Capri Sailing Week, jointly organized by Yacht Club Italiano, Circolo Remo e Vela Italia and Yacht Club Capri. At 11 a.m. the Race Committee sounded the starting signal for a race of approximately 30 miles on a route that took the fleet from Capri to a mark off Sorrento and past Punta Campanella, before rounding the island counterclockwise. A breeze of 14 to 16 knots from the west accompanied the fleet on a fairly choppy sea.

Immediately after the start, Cippa Lippa X and Anywave took the lead for a match race that would last right to the finish line - which the two crossed just seconds apart. It was Cippa Lippa X, Guido Paolo Gamucci's Mylius 60 CK, that clinched line honours, but had to wait for the calculation of the results in compensated time to confirm their place in the rankings. The corrected time results, in fact, awarded victory to Fra' Diavolo, the Mylius 60 owned by Vincenzo Addessi, who also moves to the top of the overall results after two races. In second place today and second position overall is the Swan 601 Lorina 1895, owned by IMA member Jean-Pierre Barjon, while in third on both counts is the Swan 65 Shirlaf, owned by Giuseppe Puttini and expertly guided by tactician Gabriele “Ganga” Bruni. The classification is also beginning to take shape in the separate Performance and Classic classes: the first led by a trio composed of Fra' Diavolo, Lorina 1895 and Cippa Lippa X, and the second headed by Shirlaf, Blue Oyster and Stella Maris.

Racing continues tomorrow with the start of the third race scheduled for 11 a.m. and the weather forecast confirming more of the same ideal conditions, with westerly winds of 15 to 20 knots.

Meanwhile in Naples, a large fleet has begun to gather for the ORC European Championship. Next days will see registrations and measurement checks ahead of Saturday May 15, when the Regata dei Tre Golfi, also valid this year as the offshore race for the ORC Europeans, will set off at 7 p.m.
